Holiday Shopping Safety Tips

Posted on November 9, 2018 at 8:05 AM by Kristy Bansemer

The holiday shopping season is upon us and I would like to remind residents of a few safety tips to follow over the next few months.

Derby Police Department’s 12 Safety Tips for Holiday Shopping

  1. Stay Alert: Be alert for potential thieves. Don’t overload yourself with packages. Be wary of strangers approaching you for any reason.
  2. Parking Lots: Lock your vehicle and hide your valuables. Park and walk in well-lit areas and carry your keys. Be alert to anything suspicious.
  3. Safety in Numbers: Plan your shopping trips with friends and family. Make sure everyone remains vigilant and looks out for each other.
  4. Shopping with Children: Keep a close eye on them at all times. Coach them to go to a store clerk or security guard if you get separated. Take a photo of them, including clothing, prior to shopping.
  5. Secure Your Computer: Install and update the security features on your computer. Keep your operating system and browser up-to-date.
  6. Use Secure Websites: Look for signs that the website is secure, including a closed padlock on the address bar or a URL address that begins with shttp or https, before making online purchases.
  7. Keep Personal Information Safe: Before providing information, check the website's privacy policy. Understand how your information will be stored and used. Print and save records of your online transactions.
  8. Review Credit Card Statements: Check your credit card statements immediately for unauthorized charges. Report discrepancies immediately.
  9. Delivery of Packages: Try to avoid having packages delivered when you are not home. Consider an alternate location that is secure or monitored, such as a place of business or home of a relative.
  10. Stop Deliveries: Stop mail, newspaper and other deliveries while you are on out of town.
  11. Use the Vacation Home Watch: Use the Vacation Home Watch program offered by the Derby Police Department. Officers will check on your home while you are out of town. Sign up at www.DerbyKS.com/police.
  12. Call 911: Call 911 immediately to report a crime or suspicious activity.

Happy shopping and happy holidays!
