Donation for Derby Dog Park Received

On Dec. 19, 2017, the Decarsky Foundation donated $16,000 to the City of Derby for its planned new dog park at Decarsky Park on Rock Road at the south city limit.

The Decarsky Foundation’s gift will provide a dock for dogs to jump into the pond and a path through the middle of the dog park for dogs to get to the dock.

“Jumping and swimming in a pond will be a unique feature that many residents will enjoy having for their pets,” said Mike Day, Parks Superintendent.

On Nov. 28, 2017, the City Council approved a master plan for the 63-acre park, which includes primarily ball fields with artificial turf infields and a state-of-the-art dog park featuring three yards. Platting and design work is currently in process. Construction of Phase 1 is expected to begin in summer 2018.

Primary funding for the park is provided by the Derby Difference Sales Tax (half cent), which was approved by Derby voters in 2013 and is being collected from 2015 to 2024. Several amenities for the dog park are desired but are beyond the base funding available, so donations and grants are being requested.

“Vicki Decarsky not only donated the land for this park, but now she provided the first donation to ensure the dog park will be a premier facility. Her vision is for Derby to be a community of choice, and the community certainly appreciates her generosity,” said Mayor Randy White.

Other features desired for the dog park and for which donations and grants are needed include the following:

Artificial turf for small yard                        $48,000
Shade structures (2 x $15,000)                $30,000
Agility course                                            $12,000
Doggie water features (2 x $4,500)          $  9,000

Anyone interested in making a donation should contact the City Manager’s office at (316) 788-3132 or All donations to the City of Derby are tax deductible to the extent allowed by law.
