West End Study
Plan Overview
The City of Derby completed the West End Development Plan to examine existing strengths and weaknesses of the West End, to identify barriers to development and opportunities for removing barriers by making targeted improvements with the goal of maximizing the area’s value to the community. The study area is located generally along K-15 Highway between Songbird Street and the south city limits, as shown on the map. The area is home to a variety of residential, retail, office and industrial land uses, including some of Derby’s earliest development.
The West End is an important part of our local economy. The commercial corridor along K-15 Highway contains many of Derby’s favorite shops and restaurants. Several industries located in the area provide jobs for Derby residents, and the West End Business Park offers industrial sites ready for business growth.
The City partnered with Professional Engineering Consultants (PEC) of Wichita to assist City staff with the planning process. A project team conducted research that provided data to complement stakeholder input in development of the plan. Area residents, business managers and property owners were asked to share their insight, and public forums offered all Derby residents the opportunity to provide feedback that influenced the plan.
The completed West End Development Plan recommends actions and implementation strategies to focus on unlocking the West End’s long-term potential. The plan is now completed and was adopted by the City Council on July 14, 2015. The plan will help guide the City’s decisions on infrastructure investment and future development in the study area.
