Mark your calendars for June 9 & 10 for the 12th Annual Smoke on the Plains Derby BBQ & Music Festival. This fun, free family event will be held at High Park, 2801 E. James St.
There will be a full slate of activities including the Creekstone Farms People’s Choice Tasting Contest, Smile Safari and Derby Orthodontics/Trimmell Anders & White Kids Corner, live music on the Security 1st Title Mainstage, and tasty meal options on the Citizens Bank of Kansas Food Truck Row.
New this year is the Smokin’ 5K race sponsored by the Derby Recreation Commission and the Hot Wheels for Hot Meals Car Show sponsored by the Derby Rotary Club.
The Derby Public Library will hold its 3rd Annual Medallion Hunt starting Monday, June 5. Look for clues on their website, DerbyLibrary.com, and Facebook page, @DerbyLibrary. The winner will receive a $100 gift card and BBQ prize package.

Saturday, June 10The Creekstone Farms Kansas City Barbeque Society (KCBS) Cook-off for professional teams and the Scholfield Honda Backyard BBQ Cook-off for aspiring pitmasters. Learn more about time frames and registration at DerbyBBQ.com. June 10: 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
There will be a break in scheduled activities at the park from 3 to 6 p.m.

On-site parking will be available in the paved lots and grass parking will be available accessible from the east Madison Ave. entrance. An ADA parking lot will be available on the north side of the Zimmerman Family Shelter. Look for signage when you arrive at the park. We will also have two Scheels Shuttles to get you to the action faster! Look for a friendly event volunteer if you need a ride.
Proceeds from this event benefit the McConnell Air Force Base Military and Family Readiness Center. The City of Derby has donated $18,000 of proceeds from this event to the center over the last 11 years.
