Derby residents will vote on the Derby Difference Sales Tax September 25-October 8. This sales tax is not a tax increase - it's a half-cent sales tax that would replace the current half-cent Library Sales tax. This tax paid for the construction of the Derby Public Library and continues to pay library operating expenses.
The Derby Difference Sales Tax will enhance the quality of life for residents and visitors by funding:
1) construction of a new central park, a tournament-quality baseball/softball complex, and a dog park;
2) additional emergency response personnel and equipment to improve response times in our growing community; and
3) Derby Public Library operating expenses.

I am currently part of the Derby Parks and Urban Forestry Board and we have recently discussed the cities skatepark, I am posting here as I would love some feedback from other community members. I myself am often in attendance there and think it's a great place. I would love to see small additions and improvements made but I know there has been some general opposition to the park itself from others.
There are 15 skateparks roughly within an hours drive of here. Of those, only 3 are cement, 3 have lights, and 3 were professionally designed and built. Derby is all 3. So we have one of the better skateparks in the state and still, I think we can make it even better with small and overall, cost effective means e.g. putting iron on all obstacles at the park. Not everything at the park is capped in iron, 1. making it less useable and 2. making it less durable.
Current complaints about the park are
trash
vandalism
sex on site
alcohol
smoking
fights
drugs on site
So what do you think?

I think that it would be a good idea for the city of Derby to have internship/volunteer opportunities within City Hall. The hours put in by teens and young adults could help towards their college/high school credits/hours. City Hall would benefit from all of the work put in by the students and the students would benefit by seeing a change in the community. This would give a teenager a reason to get out of the house in the summer or weekends. Teens could help anywhere from working in the Parks Department to assisting one specific government employee. I firmly believe that it would be wise for the City of Derby to seriously consider the possibility and benefits of this idea.
